The Scottish Tartans Museum & Heritage Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation was founded by the Scottish Tartans Society formed in Scotland in 1963 to "Study the origins, history, and development of tartans." The Museum located in Franklin, NC was established to be a center for reliable information on Scottish Highland Dress traditions and to serve the large Scottish-American community as a general Scottish heritage center within the United States to educate about tartans and highland dress, migration and military. Visitors are invited to view their tartan, research their surname, tour the museum and purchase merchandise ranging from a swatch of tartan fabric to complete outfits for both men and women. Funding comes from gift shop sales, donations and memberships.
