The Children’s Activities at the Northeast Florida Scottish Games and Festival are an all-day affair. We know that busy children are happy children. We have a wide variety of Scottish experiences to enjoy throughout the day. Make sure you have plenty of film in your camera!
Athletics
- Caber Toss. We have authentic cabers for the younger athletes (and their parents). This is the real thing, so please make sure to sign the waiver before you attempt to ‘turn the caber.’
- Clachneart Stone (Stone of Strength). We offer a variety of sizes of stones so all ages and sizes can be challenged.
- Sheaf Toss. This event is adapted for young athletes with the utmost concern for safety. We have replaced the traditional pitchfork with a bright red plastic snow shovel.
- Sack Races. Groups of young athletes can participate in a light-hearted traditional competition.
- Haggis Hurl (not done with real Haggis). This event was inspired by the Scottish wives who would hurl Haggis across a stream to their husbands at work in the fields. Like any other physical feat, it was soon turned into a contest by the Scots.
- Wellie Toss. Have you ever wondered how far you could toss a Wellington boot? This is your chance to find out!
- Soccer Skills Test. Here’s your chance to “Bend It Like Beckham” in a simple, shoot-out format.
Scottish Culture
- Encourage your budding artist to enter our Annual Coloring Contest. Tables, chairs (yes, Mom—chairs!!), crayons, and an official poster will be available. Take a break and keep the children busy at the same time.
- Take home a memento of your day at our Games. Local artist Fred Olive, of Olive Graphics, has brought to life three traditional highland figures – a life-size dancer, bagpiper, and highland warrior. All that’s missing is a head and yours will fit perfectly. Use your own camera to capture the moment.
- Real Scottish athletes, dancers, and storytellers will share their enthusiasm and knowledge with the next generation in the Children’s Pavilion. Check the schedule of presentations on Games day!
The Children’s Pavilion is open from 9am to 12pm, and from 1pm to 4pm. All children must have a parent accompanying them into the Pavilion, and parents must sign a waiver for each child who enters the Pavilion.
Please note: We look forward to having fun with you and your child from 9-12 and from 1-4pm. The Pavilion will be closed from 12-1 for the Opening Ceremony. We will close at 4pm so our volunteers can get something to eat and attend the Closing Ceremony.
